
MARCUS PHILLIPS
Technical and Strategic Officer
As Technical and Strategic Officer Marcus specialises in providing expert advice, guidance and solutions related to fire safety, prevention and management, quality control and project oversight to a wide range of clients, businesses, organisations and individuals. An essential part of Marcus’ role is his comprehensive understanding of relevant local, regional, and national fire safety regulations and codes of practise. He ensures he stays informed of changing fire safety and technical regulations, especially in regards to the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order (2005) and the Building Safety Act 2022. Marcus has over 43 years’ experience in the fire industry including 32 years with the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and throughout his career he gained extensive operational experience by
attending thousands of incidents during his time at various fire stations across London. This hands-on experience provided him with a deep understanding of firefighting and emergency response.
During his time in the fire service Marcus also served as a multi discipline training officer teaching subjects as diverse as first aid, physical fitness, breathing apparatus, incident command and fire safety, teaching personnel at all levels of the service. Marcus also served for several years as a fire safety enforcement officer inspecting a wide variety of buildings and conducting consultations for local authority. Marcus returned to fire safety later in his career as part of the London Fire Brigades Wembley Stadium redevelopment team.
In the latter part of Marcus’ career he served as a Senior Fire Safety Officer. He provided valuable advice and support to incident commanders, focusing on fire safety facilities within buildings and their utilisation during operational incidents assisting to bring the incident to a safe and successful conclusion.
He retired from the LFB in 2011 having obtained senior rank. On retirement Marcus continued working in the fire industry training personnel of the LFB as part of the newly privatised training contract. He initially managed the recruit and breathing apparatus training departments responsible for the competencies of thousands of brigade personnel. He went on to manage and facilitate incident command training for fire officers of all ranks including time spent at the international fire college based in the Cotswolds.
Since the Grenfell fire tragedy Marcus’ expertise and guidance has been in demand within the residential property management industry utilising his knowledge and experience to assist in making some of the affected buildings safer to live in. Marcus’ previous role before joining Alcema Fire Safety Ltd was as the ‘Fire and Life Safety Compliance Manager’ for a large professional freeholder and asset management company with a portfolio of over 10,000 mainly residential buildings.
He has served on several industry safety committees including, for the past three years, chairing the ‘British Property Federation Building Safety Sounding Board’ that report directly to government.
