Case Study – Robert Smyth Academy, Market Harborough (for Tudor Grange Academy Trust)
The Robert Smyth Academy is a secondary school in Market Harborough, Leicestershire for 11- to 18-year-olds.
The school recently underwent a large expansion to the premises with a new two-storey teaching block created, which included a 5 state of the art science laboratories complete with a preparation room, 11 classrooms, café and a kitchen facility.
A key part of the project was the installation of new fire-rated door sets designed to improve compartmentation and slow the spread of fire throughout the building.
Alcema Fire Safety was asked to provide a range of their fire safety services as part of this extensive project:
- Installation of Fire Rated Doors, together with hold-open closers integrated with the fire alarm system.
- FD30s and FD60s door sets with laminated finish to the client’s specification, some doors were oversized and with side frames. Doors were installed in accordance with our third-party accreditation and relevant fire safety standards to ensure compliance in the event of a fire.
- Emergency lighting installation and signage throughout
- Final inspections were conducted before sign-off and handover to the client
Each installation was carried out in accordance with best practice, third-party accreditation and manufacturer specifications
The works were completed while the academy remained operational, requiring careful planning and coordination to ensure safety of pupils, staff and all contractors throughout the process. Programmes were designed with the client making sure minimal disruption to the school in some sensitive periods including final exams.
The completed upgrades have strengthened fire protection across the building whilst maintaining ease for all pupils and staff using the new facility.
